Learn More about Tyres Why get tyre and wheel services from MIT Automotive? MIT Automotive are independently owned and operated and known locally for our honest service, years of experience and knowledge. We have a range of tyres and specialist equipment to perform your new tyre fitting or wheel alignment and balance. All our work is backed by the Repco Authorised Service Nationwide Warranty. While checking your tyres is something you can do yourself, as professionals MIT Automotive can check out the internal condition of your tyres as well as the entire outside surface and they are well aware of the correct methods of disassembly, repair and reassembly, along with any manufacturer or legal requirements involved. MIT Automotive can also advise you if there are any problems with your tyres, your wheel alignment, tyre balance or other areas of your car affecting your tyres such as brakes or suspension which you should be aware of to protect you and your vehicle, including the tyres themselves. When do tyres need replacing? Tyres eventually wear out over time, an unavoidable process which is quickened by hard braking and regular high speed driving as well as uneven road surfaces. Unless there are problems causing uneven tyre wear or bald spots or there is other significant damage, the depth of the tread on the tyre is usually the best indicator your tyres are due for replacement. Although the legal minimum tread depth varies, a good rule of thumb is when tread depth is approaching 1.6mm you should think about buying new tyres. Tread on a tyre is very important as this is where you get the traction to both move the car forwards and also the friction required to stop safely and efficiently. Tread is also the method by which water is dissipated away from the tyre surface in a way which prevents aquaplaning and maintaining maximum grip and control. The less tread depth you have, the less control you will have in wet driving conditions. Tyres generally last between six to ten years and the better you look after them the more chance there is that it will be the latter rather than the former. Why check tyre pressure? Tyre pressure is not just important to ensure you get the best fuel economy from your vehicle. Incorrect tyre pressure is a common cause of tyre damage as pressure and wear is directed at areas of the tyre not designed to take it. Perhaps most importantly the pressure of your tyres can have a direct impact on the driveability, and therefore the safety, of the vehicle. Why should tyres be checked regularly? You should check your tyres yourself on a regular basis to ensure they are in good condition. Be on the look out for bald or flat spots, tears and cuts in the surface of the tyre and any foreign objects likely to cause problems such as stones, nails and other road debris. You should also have a tyre professional give them a check on a regular basis as they have the knowledge and equipment to properly check the entire tyre and may spot issues you simply don't see. Why do tyres need to be rotated? Tyres will suffer from wear and tear at varying rates. The front and rear tyres for example will wear at different rates as front tyres generally carry more weight than rear ones, meaning faster heat build up and therefore increased wear. The tyres on either side of your car will also tend to wear at different rates to those on the opposite side. Having your tyres rotated regularly, every 8000 to 10,000 km for example, can help to ensure that all of your tyres wear at a similar rate and in the same places. MIT Automotive will be happy to undertake this task for you and inspect each tyre as they do it, letting you know of any issues that might present a problem or you should otherwise be aware of. We can undertake all types of tyre rotation for you including Cross rotation, straight rotation, 5 wheel rotation and four wheel drive rotation. Will a regular wheel alignment or balance help look after tyres? Regular wheel alignment helps to protect against premature or uneven tyre wear, increases the safety and handling of your vehicle and improves ride performance and fuel efficiency. Wheel balancing helps to minimise vibration through the wheels, thereby minimising premature or uneven tyre wear. Either wheel service (or both) will go a long way in helping to maximise the life of your tyres along with safety and handling benefits.

MIT Automotive are proud to announce that we are Tyre Stockist of MICKEY THOMPSON TIRES - All Terrain & Mud Terrain tyres.

Our in house brake lathe is a highly effective tool for maintaining brake rotors in excellent condition. Utilised by MIT Automotive in Fyshwick, this advanced equipment provides a reliable method for ensuring that the brake rotors are perfectly machined. By removing a thin layer from the rotor's surface, the lathe restores a clean, flat surface, essential for optimal braking performance. This precise machining is critical for maximising brake pad contact, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the braking system. At MIT Automotive in Fyshwick, we offer a cost-effective solution for brake rotor maintenance. Instead of incurring the expense of replacing the rotors, customers can benefit from machining that renews the surface and reduces unwanted noise-producing vibrations. This service not only enhances vehicle performance but also extends the life of the brake system, ensuring safety and reliability on the road. In addition to the economic advantages, using our brake lathe also contributes to the environmental sustainability efforts at MIT Automotive. By opting to machine the existing rotors rather than replace them, fewer materials are discarded, which reduces waste and the demand for new parts. This approach aligns with a more sustainable automotive maintenance practice, reflecting the commitment of MIT Automotive to responsible service offerings. Brake Rotor Machining FAQs How do I know if my brake rotors need machining? Common signs include squealing or grinding noises, steering wheel vibration when braking, brake pedal pulsation or visible grooves on the rotor surface. These symptoms can also indicate other brake problems, so an inspection by MIT Automotive in Fyshwick can help determine whether machining or replacement is needed. What is brake rotor machining, and how does it work? Brake rotor machining involves removing a thin layer of metal from the rotor using a specialised brake lathe. This creates a smooth, even surface for the brake pads to contact, helping improve braking consistency and potentially reduce noise and vibration. MIT Automotive uses an in-house brake lathe to machine suitable rotors. Is it better to machine brake rotors or replace them? Machining can be a cost-effective alternative to replacement when the rotors are in suitable condition. However, rotors that are too thin, cracked, severely damaged or outside the manufacturer's specifications must be replaced. MIT Automotive can inspect your brakes and recommend the safest, most practical option. Is it safe to drive with warped or damaged brake rotors? Brake vibration, pulsation, unusual noises or reduced braking performance should never be ignored. Damaged or uneven rotors can affect braking performance and increase safety risks. If your brakes feel seriously compromised, avoid driving the vehicle and arrange professional assistance. Book a brake inspection with MIT Automotive in Fyshwick to identify the problem. How much does brake rotor machining cost, and how long does it take? The cost and time required depend on your vehicle, rotor condition and whether the rotors need to be removed for machining. Machining suitable rotors may cost less than replacing them, but additional brake repairs may be necessary. Contact MIT Automotive for a quote and an estimated timeframe for brake rotor machining in Fyshwick. Does brake rotor machining help reduce brake noise and extend rotor life? Yes, machining can remove surface irregularities that contribute to brake noise, uneven pad contact and vibration. It can also allow serviceable rotors to remain in use rather than being replaced unnecessarily, reducing material waste. However, machining cannot correct every brake problem, and the rotor must remain within the manufacturer's minimum thickness specifications. Regular brake inspections at MIT Automotive help keep your braking system safe and reliable. MIT Automotive provides an excellent solution for maintaining your vehicles brake system. This technology not only ensures the highest standards of brake performance but also does so at a fraction of the cost of new parts. By prioritising quality and efficiency, MIT Automotive continues to deliver superior service, keeping vehicles running safely and smoothly in Fyshwick.

Experiencing knocking or clunking sounds as you turn the steering wheel? Such issues can significantly impact your driving experience and safety. MIT Automotive, located in Fyshwick, ACT, specialises in diagnosing and resolving power steering problems, ensuring smooth and reliable vehicle performance. Common Power Steering Issues One prevalent issue that drivers face is a knocking or clunking noise when turning the steering wheel. This sound can often be traced back to a worn bush between the steering column and the electric steering motor. Unfortunately, this is a common problem, but the good news is that it can be resolved by replacing the worn bushing. At MIT Automotive, we have extensive experience in handling this issue, having replaced several bushings just in the last month. If you're encountering this problem, don’t hesitate to reach out to our expert team for a quote and professional service. Understanding the Steering System Components A vehicle’s steering system comprises several critical components, each playing a vital role in ensuring precise and effortless steering. Here’s a breakdown of the key parts: Steering Wheel - The steering wheel is the driver's primary interface with the steering system. It transmits the driver’s input to the steering column and ultimately to the wheels. Steering Column - The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering mechanism. It often houses a collapsible section for safety in case of a collision. Steering Gear - The steering gear converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels. It can be either a rack-and-pinion system or a recirculating ball system, with the former being more common in modern vehicles. Power Steering Pump - In vehicles equipped with hydraulic power steering, the power steering pump pressurises the hydraulic fluid, which helps in reducing the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. Electric Steering Motor - In electric power steering systems, an electric motor assists the steering mechanism. This motor can be located on the steering column or the steering rack. Tie Rods - Tie rods connect the steering gear to the steering knuckles, allowing the wheels to turn as the steering gear moves. Bushings - Bushings are crucial components that provide cushioning and reduce friction between moving parts. A worn bushing, particularly between the steering column and the electric steering motor, can lead to the knocking or clunking noises often reported by drivers. Hyundai Owners, is your steering knocking or clunking as you turn the steering wheel, this could be caused by a worn bush between your steering column and electric steering motor.
